Healing Begins Where Safety is Felt.
Understanding Trauma Responses
Many people seeking therapy do not initially identify their experiences as trauma. Instead, they notice symptoms like anxiety, emotional overwhelm, perfectionism, relationship struggles, or a constant sense of being “on edge.”
Trauma is not always the result of a single event. It can develop through ongoing stress, relational wounds, emotional neglect, or growing up in environments that felt unsafe, unpredictable, or overwhelming.
Trauma can also be connected to what was missing — emotional attunement, consistency, safety, or feeling truly supported. When the nervous system remains in a prolonged state of stress, it can become dysregulated and organized around survival rather than safety.
Some people experience heightened activation such as anxiety, hypervigilance, overthinking, or emotional reactivity, while others experience shutdown responses like emotional numbness, low energy, disconnection, or dissociation. Many people move between both states, which can feel emotionally and physically exhausting over time.
In survival mode, the nervous system becomes focused on protection rather than presence, connection, and ease. This is why the past can continue to feel emotionally present even when you logically know you are safe now.
Trauma can show up as:
Anxiety, panic, or persistent emotional distress.
Feeling constantly on edge or hypervigilant.
Overthinking or needing control to feel safe.
Difficulty trusting others or feeling secure in relationships.
Perfectionism, people-pleasing, or fear of failure.
Emotional exhaustion or burnout.
Feeling disconnected, numb, or shut down.
Negative self-beliefs or persistent self-doubt.
Healing Trauma at Its Root
Healing is not about forcing yourself to think differently about the past. It’s about helping your nervous system learn that it no longer has to stay in a constant state of protection.
Many people are highly self-aware and understand their patterns clearly, yet still feel emotionally stuck in cycles they can’t fully shift. This is often because unresolved experiences continue to live within the nervous system, even when the mind logically knows the past is over.
I specialize in trauma therapy using EMDR — a research-supported approach that helps the brain and body process unresolved experiences at their root. Rather than only talking through what happened, EMDR works with how experiences are stored within the nervous system, allowing their emotional intensity to soften over time. When helpful, I also integrate somatic techniques and parts work to support deeper emotional regulation, self-understanding, and lasting healing.
